Work From Home

Work from home is a new concept to Sri Lanka and it is not fresh concept to developed countries either. Most of Sri Lankan work force is ready accept this and it wont be alien feeling anymore.

History of Work from home concept

The concept is invented by a NASA Engineer in and it was introduced as Telecommuting in that era. In his book, the Telecommunications-Transportation Tradeoff, published in 1973, NASA engineer Jack Nilles created the word "telecommuting" to describe remote labor.

Although modern-day remote work regulations were developed and used by businesses after 1999, they predate the personal computer. Five IBM employees were given the opportunity to work from home as an experiment in 1979. By 1983, the number had risen to 2000. JC Penny allowed their call center employees to work from home (Guptha, 2020).


How Embrace the Work from home concept by People

Work from home is a brand new impression for most of Sri Lankan workforce other than IT sector. It was came in to scenario as a result of covid-19 pandemic since end of 2019. During this period many business and organizations either bankrupted or collapsed cause of many reasons. For an instance, Astra-zeneca Covid-19 vaccine manufacturer had to stop their production due to severe lives threat in India. Likewise majority of leading companies had to cease their production or services.

In the first part of the country lockdown people was jailed in home and extensively stress due to uniform lifestyle, basically they are away from day to day office life. It led to increase the domestic violence as well. Meanwhile work from home is introduced and its popularity is rapidly grown and consequently people got back to their normal life and enjoying rather than typical working

Advantages of Work from home

  • Time flexibility.
  • Minimized the transportation during office hours.
  • Can spend more time with the family and children.
  • Less Transportation, uniforms, costumes and attire expenses.

 

Disadvantages of Work from Home

  •  Every duties cannot be carried out remotely by using computer or similar device
  • Industrial, office real environment cannot bring to home and therefore realistic solutions will not applies in any issues.
  • KPI and similar indexes are not visualized directly and it will adversely affect to employees efficiency.


Future of the Concept

Majority of employees of the world love this concept and experts hope remote or work from home employees will be increased extensively in the future. Also it would more beneficial for the employers in many ways. The Covid-19 pandemic caused a major upheaval in the global work economy in 2020. While working from home used to be a luxury offered by select employers, it has now become the norm for most. 70% of the workforce will be working remotely at least five days a month by 2025, according to estimates. While 2020 may be seen as the year of remote work, we believe it is only the beginning, since the trend is expected to continue in 2021(Castrillon, 2020). The trend will be led to widen the IT industry and  related infrastructure in the future world, and enhance public IT literacy.

  3. Good article. My believe is though this concept becoming extremely popular, still in Sri Lankan context we don't have a proper monitoring or evaluation system for Telecommuting or work from home. Evaluation process should be developed.

  4. Even though we agreed or disagreed, had no options rather than start performing work from home and this is really win win situation for the both employees and employers. Also it will helpful to cut down most waste in many ways such as transportation, waiting, motion, water & electricity, building maintenance and rental, sanitary, etc... but the negative part of work from home is that the every employer cannot engage with this and mainly office related employees can engage and most of manufacturing / services related direct employees got no opportunity to engage with work from home concepts.

  7. Work from home is one of most common concept in current business world. Which really advantage for employee and organization as well. But there should be proper system to monitor the employee home working. otherwise it makes reduce the profit of the firm. Good explanation and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  10. Work from home started with covid 19 impact and a new experience for many of us in Asia. New learning and will likely to be a continuing throughout when you consider the benefit attached with it.
