Flexitime
Flextime, often known as Flexi-time,
is a non-traditional approach to working hours. Employees can choose their own
working hours as a result of this. However, there is a specific period
during which all employees must be present at work. The rest of the work hours
can be changed to suit the needs of the employee.
The intricacies of flexi-time rules differ from one company to the next. Employees have the freedom to change their working hours from one period to the next without getting permission from their bosses. Flexi-time was first established in Germany in 1967 as a way to alleviate transportation and travel time issues (Pierce & Newstrom, 1980 cited in Berkery, et al., 2020). Some organizations such as popular supermarket chains, Delivery services, in Sri Lanka have applied Flexi-time working schedules to some extent in their operations.
Advantages of Flexitime
§ Employees can achieve
work-life balance and plan work around their other personal tasks and
responsibilities using flexitime. Allowing for flextime is another aspect of
creating a family-friendly workplace.
§ Employee retention:
Flexible scheduling leads to higher employee satisfaction and decreased
turnover.
§ Less work pressure:
Dividing time according to the employee's preferences boosts morale, which
helps with stress management.
§ Employees' loyalty increased.
§ Less travel time: By
avoiding peak traffic hours, you can save time while maintaining a high level
of energy
Disadvantages of Flexitime
§ Communication among
team members: It's difficult to schedule meetings that accommodate everyone
when everyone's schedules are varied
§ Managing flexible
work can necessitate extra discipline.
§ It does not apply to all industries.
Conclusion
Flexitime is having more benefits for
both Employers and employees due to many reasons despite a few drawbacks. Whereas it
cannot apply to all industries due to some challenges and inaccessibility. Researchers
argue that organizations that offer flexi-time create a positive employment
relationship because flexi-time can be seen as an HCHR practice implemented to
address work/non-work conflict by reducing the interference of non-work
responsibilities on work commitments, thus providing a benefit and incentive
for employees to stay with the company. Benefits like this can
foster a great working relationship, which will likely lead to lower employee
turnover
